LBC celebrates its 50th Anniversary

Alumni sit togather in the Huntington Club

This year marks Lyman Briggs College's 50th Anniversary. During MSU's Homecoming Week, LBC hosted an event for alumni to celebrate this momentous occasion. Guests from across the country came together in Holmes Hall to commemorate half a century of bridging the sciences and the humanities!

Interim Dean Mark Largent said, "the 50th anniversary events were a wonderful opportunity for faculty and staff to see old friends and meet many alumni. Hearing about their experiences in Briggs and in the years since they have graduated encouraged us to think about new ways we can integrate our alumni into the ongoing work of the College."

The event kicked off on Wednesday, October 18th with a welcome reception in the Huntington Club. After some opening remarks from Mark Largent, alumni, faculty and students spent a wonderful evening mingling and reconnecting. The event also featured a video of alumni updates, compiled by LBC alumnus Frank Dolinar.

Alumni tour the MSU Horticulture Gardens

On Thursday and Friday, alumni were able to tour a variety of places across campus, including the MSU Bug House and the Horticulture Garden. LBC students led tours of Holmes Hall, showcasing our updated labs and classrooms. Alumni were also able to enjoy a meal in the Holmes Hall Cafeteria.

Guests also took a tour of MSU cyclotron. The cyclotron has changed drastically since many of our alumni attended MSU. Some recalled the small cyclotron installed during the 70s, while others were attending during the lab’s first expansion. One alumnus even worked on part of the construction! Alumni were given an overview of the research done at the cyclotron, as well as a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility.

Alumni met over coffee and cookies to share their stories at a discussion panel on Thursday. Many spoke of the interesting and unexpected careers their LBC degrees led to. The following night, students got their chance to share! Study abroad participants, undergraduate researchers, Learning Assistants, and INQUIRE students among those demonstrating their Briggs experience to alumni.

Alumni enjoy LBC's Homecoming Tailgate

"It is clear from interacting with current students, staff and faculty that Briggs has stayed true to its mission," said Pat Merry, head of the planning committee for the event. "Not only are Briggs students involved in truly remarkable activities, Briggs alumni have been involved in truly remarkable careers. That those careers spread across an amazing array of disciplines is a testament to what Briggs provided us. The interaction with current and past Briggsies was energizing."

To celebrate MSU's Homecoming and wrap of the celebration, alumni attended the Homecoming parade, as well as LBC's Homecoming Tailgate. Faculty, staff, and students all joined alumni outside of Holmes Hall to enjoy some good food and beautiful weather in preparation for an afternoon of Spartan Football!

The LBC community are immensely grateful to every who attended, as well as the alumni and staff who worked tirelessly to organize a great event! We look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries with you in the future!
